1 Month Update from Ashtanga Yoga Great Barrington
ASHTANGA YOGA GREAT BARRINGTON
There will be no Mysore class tomorrow, Tuesday, May 20th as we will be having an energy assessment done on the building at that time.
Normal class times resume on Wednesday, May 21st, which marks one month of having our doors open to the local Ashtanga community.
Class Schedule
Mysore: Sunday to Friday, 8:30 - 10 AM.
Chai on Sundays after practice
Tom teaches Sunday - Tuesday, Mary teaches Wednesday and Thursday, and I (Kathy) teach on Fridays.
For now I’m taking breathing and meditation off the schedule as I’ve been enjoying doing both by Lake Mansfield in the mornings now that the weather supports it but if anyone would like to join me before practice, send me a text: 917-797-8272
New to Ashtanga? We encourage those new to Ashtanga to come watch a class and talk to our teachers about starting a program that is tailored for them.
Classes are taught “Mysore Style”, which means that you can come anytime in the 8:30 to 10 AM window to do your practice. If you are new to Ashtanga, please allow at least a half an hour for your first practice where you will begin by learning sun salutations and finishing poses. If you are familiar with Ashtanga but have not been practicing it for a while or otherwise have a regular yoga practice, then the teacher will help you get acquainted or re-acquainted with the traditional Ashtanga Yoga sequence.
A note on adjustments:
At Ashtanga Yoga Great Barrington, we honor the traditional method of teaching Ashtanga yoga, which often includes hands-on adjustments. These adjustments are intended to support the student’s understanding and embodiment of the practice, to promote safe alignment, and to help the student deepen their experience of the postures. The hands are also used as a teaching tool to minimize verbal interaction, which tends to lead to more thinking when we are ideally trying to get out of our minds and into our bodies.
We recognize that each student’s body and boundaries are unique, and we are committed to creating a respectful, communicative, and consent-based environment. It is the mutual responsibility of both student and teacher to ensure that any physical adjustments are welcome and appropriate. We encourage students to speak up at any time—before, during, or after class—if an adjustment ever feels uncomfortable, invasive, or unsafe. Consent to touch may be given or withdrawn at any time, without explanation.
Please find index cards or colored label type stickers in or near the wooden box on the bookcase. If you have an injury or something you would like the teacher to know, please note it on a card or sticker and put it on the corner of your mat or nearby so that the teacher can see it.
You can switch these up any day you like - no explanation necessary. And if you have an injury but otherwise enjoy adjustments that won’t aggravate that injury, you might take a green sticker or yellow sticker and write the injury on it.
Location
250 Maple Ave in Great Barrington. Please note the studio is in our renovated barn on our home property just one mile from downtown GB. On dry days, we have a folding chalkboard we’ll put out by the street to make it easier to find us. Maple Ave is more commonly known as Route 23, which is the road between Great Barrington and Hillsdale. We’re on the left as you head towards town or the right if you’re heading towards NY from the traffic circle. Our driveway has split rail fences on either side of it and we are located across the street from where the cornfield begins on your way out of town or ends if you’re heading towards town…
Parking: Please do your best not to block anyone in (especially the white Tesla). You can park in any available spots on the property and on the grass on the right side of the driveway as needed.
We’re here for you!
