Fundamentals of Yoga Philosophy: What Is Yoga?

with Gina D’addario saturday, Nov. 21st, 2026 from 11 AM - 1 PM

Yoga in its authentic form is far more than just a collection of practices to foster health in the body, mind, and emotions, but a comprehensive system of holistic practice and studyfor the purposes of deep, personal, spiritual transformation. In the West in particular, there are many misconceptions and incomplete notions about what yoga is – this workshop will explain and explore the genuine meaning of yoga, drawing on ancient wisdom from the foundational texts and teachings of the most authoritative gurus of this sacred practice.

Based on the Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali as translated and taught by Guru T Krishnamacharya, the Master of Modern Yoga, as well as his revered son TKV Desikachar, this introduction to the most personally impactful element of yoga, its underlying philosophy, will illuminate what yoga really is off the mat.

*Not required or necessary, but preferred translation of the Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali is by

TKV Desikachar, found in T he Heart of Yoga

Gina D’Addario began on the path of yoga 25 years ago, with most of the past decade as a student and teacher in the lineage of Guru T Krishnamacharya as handed down through his son TKV Desikachar and family. Gina continues to practice and study with her esteemed teacher Danielle Tarantolla but has been fortunate to learn from many gifted and inspiring teachers in a variety of lineages, and is grateful to also count Sara Intonato, Stacy Plaske, and Cher Meli among her most cherished and influential guides. After a decade and a half of dedicated practice, Gina completed the Yoga Foundation’s 500-hour teacher training program and transformed her personal practice into a professional calling. Focusing on bespoke, holistic, and comprehensive work with individual students as well as groups, Gina has worked with a wide variety of populations, from families and young adults to mature students with serious health conditions. She has also served as a Retreat Assistant on several domestic and international yoga retreats, helping to deliver world-class experiences to dedicated and adventurous yoga practitioners. Gina is grateful to share the holistic, accessible, and authentic yoga tradition of Guru T. Krishnamacharya and Sir TKV Desikachar with students who aspire to personal growth and transformation.
